Title: "Rules for Riding Desegregated Buses"
Link: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/eyesontheprize/sources/ps_bus.html Summary: In this article, the Montgomery Improvement Association creates a list of which all African Americans are advised to follow when riding on a bus. This takes place in 1956 after boycotts by African Americans helps lead to the overturning of the case Plessy v. Ferguson through the case Brown v. Board of Education. Buses are ordered to be integrated as desegregation is enforced. This list calls for nonviolence from the African American community while they ride the buses. It advises to be courteous to everyone on the bus, to listen to the bus driver, and to find a vacant seat. The list prohibits any kind of fighting, provoked and unprovoked, and any bragging. Significance: This list, because it was created by the African American community, shows the desire for nothing else but equality. Violence does not have to be a part of this journey to a better life. This shows that nonviolence is possible and powerful to gain Civil Rights. As was advocated by Martin Luther King Jr., nonviolent protests are the only way to move forward. At a time when African Americans were considered inferior and even savage by some whites, being involved in nonviolent forms of protests proves that the African American community is strong.
